Different boards of directors require different closeness to the organization. Some BoDs need to be more involved than others, and some are part of what it takes to raise money and funds (like the BoD of a nonprofit).
But generally speaking, the most functional and highest functioning BoD (with the best perspective to offer the best service to an organization) maintains independence-- this is particularly true in for-profit organizations.
If a Board Member is too close to the business, too close to the CEO, too close to partners, too closer to customers... how do we know they are capable of making decisions that aren't influenced by their relationships OR their individual interests?
